Will One Be Sinful if One Called the Adhan Incorrectly?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

While giving Adhan, if we say Ashadu Anna Muhammadur Rasulullah instead of saying Ashadu anna Muhammadar Rasulullah, will it be considered a mistake, or is it correct? If I have made this mistake, will I be sinful?
There’s only one difference between Muhammadur Rasulullah and Muhammadar Rasulullah.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

It is a grammatical error because the correct way is ‘Anna Muhammadur Rasulullah. Neither will you be sinful. Just learn how to call out the Adhan properly with your local Imam or a reliable local scholar. Allah Most High reward you for your efforts, amin.

What is the Wording Of The Adhan?

It was narrated that Abu Mahdhura said, “The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) taught me the Adhan and said:

‘Allahu Akbar, Allahu akbar, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar; Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah; Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah (Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest; I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah; I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger Allah).’ Then he repeated it and said: ‘Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah, Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah; Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah, Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasulullah; Hayya ‘alas-salah, Hayya ‘ala-salah; Hayya ‘alal-falah Hayya ‘alal-falah; Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar; La ilaha ill-Allah (I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah; I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah; Come to prayer, come to prayer; come to prosperity, come to prosperity; Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest; there is none worthy of worship except Allah).’” [Nasa‘i]

Sunna of Responding to Adhan and Reward of Entry into Paradise

Umar ibn al-Khattab reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “When the caller to prayer says, ‘Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest,’ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ then let one of you say, ‘Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest.’ اللهُ أَكْبَرُ اللهُ أَكْبَرُThen he says, أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ قَالَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ‘I testify there is no God but Allah,’ one says, أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ قَالَ أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ‘I testify there is no God but Allah.’ Then he says,  أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللهِ‘I testify Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah,’ one says, أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللهِ ‘I testify Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.’ Then he says, ‘Come to prayer,’ حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِone says,  لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللهِ‘There is no movement or might but in Allah.’ Then he says, Come to salvation,’  حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِone says,  لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللهِ‘There is no movement or might but in Allah.’ Then he says,  لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللهِ‘Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest,’ one says,  لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللهِ‘Allah is the greatest, Allah is the greatest.’ Then he says,  إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ‘There is no God but Allah,’ one says,  إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ‘There is no God but Allah,’ from his heart and he will enter Paradise.” [Muslim]
