How Can Clothes Be Cleansed of Amniotic Fluid?

Hanafi Fiqh

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

I am currently expecting my first child in the next few weeks. I was told that leaking amniotic fluid is one of the signs of labor. I’d like to know if this liquid is pure and how to clean clothes stained with it.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

I pray you are well.

It is comprised of water produced by the mother. As it exits the vagina, it is impure. Everything that comes from the vagina is impure and must be cleaned if it is soiled, including clothes and body areas. [Ibn ’Abidin, Radd al-Muhtar]

If one can wash the clothes or body easily, then fine; otherwise, keep extra clothing nearby to change and pray.
