Is a Woman Considered a Beginner after Seeing Blood After Post Natal Bleeding?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

If a woman starts her period after a long pause, post-natal bleeding, and breastfeeding. When she first sees blood, do we treat her as a beginner, or do we consider her last habit before post-natal bleeding and pregnancy? If her previous habit was six days of menstruation, and she sees blood for a day after a gap of a few months, then she sees it again on day fourteen, how do we assign her days? Does she take precautionary ghusl on day ten? After the first day of bleeding ends, should she take a ghusl, or is wudu sufficient?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

You will follow your usual habit of six days after your post-natal bleeding period ends. However, in your case, you seem to have had irregular bleeding (istihada). Your bleeding stopped within a day. Disregard your fourteenth-day bleeding, too, as it has come less than fifteen days. Now you just wait for the regular habit of bleeding.

Advice

It is a personal obligation (fard) for every adult woman to learn the basic rules of menstruation and to ask, as you’ve done, in the case of a complicated or unique situation. The following two books, A Muslim Woman’s Guide To Menstruation Rulings: Amazon.co.uk: Ackbarali, Naielah and Coming of Age by Ustadha Hedaya Hartford are very accessible books to learn these rulings. They are in English and have many practical examples, life experiences, and even illustrative charts to calculate menstruation.
