Can a Shafi’i recite the Hanafi Tashahhud?
Shafi'i Fiqh
Answered by Shaykh Muhammad Carr
Question
Can a Shafi’i recite the Hanafi tashahhud, and are all variations of the tashahhud allowed? Furthermore, I want to pray in a manner that is valid in both schools.
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful and Compassionate
Allah Most High says, “Allah intends ease for you and does not intend hardship for you.” [Quran, 2:185]
A Shafi’i may recite the Hanafi tashahhud. All variations of the tashahhud are allowed. [Mawardi, al-Hawi] For your prayer to be valid in both schools, simply avoid that which invalidates the prayer according to both schools.
A Shaf’i may invoke the tashahhud narrated by Ibn Mas’ud and preferred by the Hanafis. This falls into the ambit of ‘variations’ (tanawwu’) wherein the Prophet (May Allah bless him and grant him peace) would do the same act or pronouncement but in different forms.
The scholarly difference relates to which is superior, while they agree that all are valid.
May Allah make our prayer a means of drawing closer to Him. The purpose of prayer is to draw us closer to Allah. This should not be sacrificed with our preoccupation with the exoteric at its expense.
I pray this is of benefit and that Allah guides us all.
