Can Zakat Be Paid In Monthly Installments?
Shafi'i Fiqh
Answered by Shaykh Muhammad Carr
Question
What should a woman do if she owes zakat on her mahr and gold but can only pay in small monthly installments?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
Allah says,
“Accept charity offerings from their wealth, cleansing them and making them grow thereby to full purity in faith and deed.” [Quran, 9:103]
She may pay her zakat in advance through small monthly installments. The Shafi‘i School permits this, provided that the wealth has already reached the minimum threshold (nisab).
If the minimum threshold is met and zakat is paid before the lunar year has elapsed, the payment is valid and will be counted as zakat for that wealth. In such a case, she will not be required to pay zakat again on that wealth after the year is completed. [al-Fiqh al-Manhaji]
Proof
‘Abbas (Allah be pleased with him) sought permission from the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) to pay his zakat in advance, and the Prophet permitted him [Abu Dawud; Tirmidhi; Ibn Majah]
Make Your Zakat Do More
If you do owe zakat, I would advise you to consider supporting the Islamic Scholars Fund. Its reach and impact are enormous, and you’d be supporting many scholars and students who make a real difference in the lives and faith of many Muslims worldwide.
Please take a look at the ISF Report.
