Can One Pray in Clothing from Which an Impure Substance has Just been Removed?

Hanafi Fiqh

Question: I recently heard that the Prophet Muhammad, SAS, went to the mosque in the same clothes he had relations with his wife in (but A’isha (RAD) had cleaned the dirty spots off them) and one would be able to see the water spots on The Prophet’s clothes when he was at the mosque?

Is this true? I heard this was in Sahih Al Bukari ( hadith )

Answer: Wa alaikum assalaam wa rahmatullah wa barakatuh,

I hope you are in the best of health and spirits insha’Allah.

According to the Hanafi school, clothes affected by impure sexual fluids are purified by the washing away of the impure fluid. [Shurunbulali, Maraqi al-Falah]

It is related that Sayyida `A’isha said, “I used to wash janaba (semen) from the clothes of the Prophet, Allah bless him and give him peace, and he would go out to the prayer while the traces of the wet spots were visible.” [Bukhari]

Therefore, there is no harm in immediately praying in such clothes (i.e. in which an impure substance has just been removed), as is the case in the hadith you mention.

And Allah knows best.

wassalaam,
