Should I Ask Forgiveness for Whom I Wished Something Bad?

Answered by Ustadha Shazia Ahmad

Question

Do you need their forgiveness if you hoped something terrible for someone but repented?

Answer

Thank you for your question. It is not obligatory or recommended to ask forgiveness in such a situation because it will likely worsen the relationship.

A Good Turn

If you feel guilty about hoping for something wrong for someone, the best thing that you can do is to give them a good turn. The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) told us, “Have taqwa (fear) of Allah wherever you may be, and follow up a bad deed with a good deed which will wipe it out, and behave well towards the people.” [Tirmidhi]

Negative Thoughts

In addition, remember that one is not morally responsible for having an evil thought that one did not act upon. This is one of the great mercies of our Lord, so don’t be too tough on yourself.
