Is It Permissible for Men to Wear Stylish Glasses as Adornment?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Shaykh Yusuf Weltch
Question
Can men wear items like glasses with silver-colored frames, metal zippers, or brass buttons, and do these affect the validity of prayer? Additionally, is it permissible for men to wear stylish glasses as adornment, or should they choose simpler styles to maintain humility?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate
Simply put, it is not permissible for men to wear any jewelry item except for a silver ring. That said, many things we now call jewelry also serve a utilitarian function and are, therefore, permitted to be worn. [‘Ala’ al-Din ‘Abidin, al-Hadiyya al-‘Ala’iyya]
Among these things are watches and glasses.
Since watches and glasses are no longer in the jewelry category, whether they are stylish or not is irrelevant to the ruling as long as they do not contain any impermissible precious metals such as gold (for men) or silver. Note, that the color gold or silver is not what is meant.
Hope this helps
