Can I Marry My Grandmother’s Half-Sister?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
Is it permissible to marry my grandmother’s half-sister from her father’s side? She is my great half-aunt, sharing a father with my grandmother, but not the same mother. Is marriage to her allowed in Islam?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.
It’s not permissible to marry your grandmother’s half-sister. As you mentioned, she’s your grand-aunt, which makes her your mahram, a blood relative you can’t marry. [Al-Fatawa al-Hindiyya]
Who is a Mahram?
A Mahram is he with whom marriage is permanently unlawful, and this permanent unlawfulness/prohibition of marriage is established in three ways: The relationship of lineage, the relationship through fosterage, and the relationship through marriage. See the detailed link below.
