How Should I Respond to Doubts About Islam After Watching Debates?

Answered by Shaykh Faraz Rabbani

Question

Watching debates between Muslims and non-Muslims raises doubts in my faith. How should I respond, and what is the path back to clarity?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.

I pray that Allah Most High alleviates the unease in your heart and strengthens your faith.

Rest assured, the experience you describe is more widespread than many assume, and the religion addresses such concerns directly.

The solution does not lie in engaging with further debates. Instead, distance yourself from environments that foster doubt and seek guidance from qualified scholars.

Establish your faith upon the Quran, the Sunna, and the Sunni theological tradition. In Islam, truth is determined by reliable transmission and sound reasoning, rather than by persuasive online arguments.

Imam Ghazali’s Warning Against Debates and Disputants

Imam Ghazali (Allah have mercy on him) warned at length in the Ihya against engaging with disputants when one’s knowledge is unprepared. He counted aimless disputation among the sins of the tongue. [Ghazali, Ihya’ Ulum al-Din]

The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “No people have gone astray after having been upon guidance except that they were given to argumentation.” [Tirmidhi]

Sayyid Murtada al-Zabidi (Allah have mercy on him) emphasizes this point in his renowned commentary on the Ihya, Ithaf al-Sada al-Muttaqin. He explains that even legitimate theological debate is a discipline for those properly trained, not for casual observers.

The appropriate path for the ordinary believer is to maintain simple faith based on the Quran, the Sunna, and the essential teachings of the religion as learned from qualified teachers. [Zabidi, Ithaf al-Sada al-Muttaqin]

What Establishes Truth

In our theology, truth is established by decisive transmission—the Quran and mass-transmitted hadith—and by sound reason (dalil aqli).

The persuasiveness of an argument does not necessarily reflect the truth of its content. Those who deviate from the established framework, regardless of their rhetorical skill, are best avoided.

Allah Most High says, “And when you see those who engage in vain discourse about Our verses, turn away from them.” [Quran 6:68; Keller, The Quran Beheld]

He also tells us, “And do not pursue what you have no knowledge of; surely the hearing, the sight, and the heart—every one of those will be questioned.” [Quran 17:36]

And He commands, “Ask the people of remembrance if you do not know.” [Quran 16:43]

Practical Guidelines

In practice: take a fast from the videos and threads that stir doubt without resolving it.

Replace them with a structured study of the Quran, the Sunna, and the works of the great scholars of the umma. Once your faith and religious understanding take root, debates lose their grip on you.

Faith is strengthened through reliable knowledge, not through contentious online exchanges.

Withdraw from sources that generate doubt and focus on those that cultivate certainty. As knowledge becomes established, by Allah’s permission, doubts will subside, and you will reflect on this period as a time when uncertain faith became steadfast.

And Allah knows best.
