Should I Marry a Hindu for My Hindu Family despite Being Muslim?

Answered by Ustadha Shazia Ahmad

Question

I was born to the Hindu faith and later accepted Islam, now my family wants me to marry a Hindu man, what should I do? People are suggesting I keep Allah in my heart, but still marry a Hindu, but it’s wrong.

Answer

Thank you for your question. May Allah reward you for converting to Islam and may you find the perfect Muslim spouse to marry and raise your children as Muslims.

Hindu

It is prohibited for you to marry a Hindu man, and if you did, the marriage would be invalid. If you are keeping your religion a secret, you should make a plan to tell your family. If they insist that you marry this man regardless of your religion, then ask him to become Muslim first, start practicing Islam, and then consider marrying him.

Please pray istikhara about what to do. You can’t live life as a closet Muslim; you must have the freedom to fully and openly practice the religion and live a religious family life. I pray that Allah makes it easy for you and sends you blessings from whence you least expect. Please see tips for converts below.

Way Out

Find solace in that Allah’s promise is true in the Quran: “[…] And whosoever fears Allah and keeps his duty to Him, He will make a way for him to get out (from every difficulty). And He will provide for him from sources he never could imagine. And whosoever puts his trust in Allah, then He will suffice him. Verily, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Indeed Allah has set a measure for all things.” [Quran, 65:2-3]
