Is It Permissible to Pursue Treatment for My Sexual Dysfunction?
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
I have been experiencing sexual dysfunction for almost 10 years and am exploring treatments, including TENS therapy for the genital nerve, as suggested in a scientific article. Is it permissible to pursue this treatment in light of my condition?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate
I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.
Yes, it would be permissible to pursue this treatment of Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) for your sexual dysfunction after seeking reliable expert opinions from medical and health professionals, as there are many other treatments that can be harmful and hoaxes.
Abu al-Darda (Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) said: “Indeed Allah has sent down both illness and its cure, and He has appointed a cure for every illness, so treat yourselves medically, but use nothing unlawful.” [Abu Dawud]
Sexual Therapy
Sexual therapy that is within the limits of the Sharia is a praiseworthy goal, as it enables one to fulfill the rights of one’s spouse with excellence, something every Muslim should be most avid about. However, the means taken to satisfy this goal should be permitted and proper and should not entail anything not in line with the values and guidance of the Sharia our Beloved Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace) came with.
We should seek the guidance of the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and give him peace) regarding sexual matters and other dimensions of marriage—legal, spiritual, and emotional.
