Question
How can I pray if my menses end during travel, and I cannot perform ghusl or tayammum due to lack of soil at the airport? Is wudu sufficient in this situation?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate
I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.
Wudu is not sufficient. While it is possible to find dusty areas in some cleaner parts of the airport, preparing for this scenario is essential for Muslims. If one cannot find a dusty area for Tayammum (dry ablution), one will need to wait until one reaches one’s destination to take a bath and perform one’s prayers.
‘Imran Ibn Husayn al-Khuza‘i (Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Allah’s Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace) saw a person sitting aloof and not praying with the people. He asked him, “O so and so! What prevented you from offering the prayer with the people?”
He replied, “O Allah’s Messenger (Allah bless him and give him peace)! I am in a state of ritual impurity (Junub), and there is no water.” The Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace) said, “Perform Tayammum with clean earth, and that will be sufficient for you.” [Bukhari]
