Is Airdrop Mining Permissible?

Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel

Question

Is airdrop mining permissible in Islam? Many Muslims are involved in it, especially in countries like Nigeria, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. How can we determine if a project involves gambling or interest (riba)? Please provide detailed guidance.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate

I pray you are in good faith and health. Thank you for your question.

Esteemed Muftis and scholars state if a project adheres to Sharia principles, such as airdrop coins having an actual utility purpose and not being involved in interest or gambling activities, then it would be permissible.

However, if the tokens being airdropped originate from a cryptocurrency project that has already been deemed non-Sharia compliant due to violating rules around interest, prohibited trade activities, or other Sharia violations, then receiving those airdropped tokens for free would likewise be impermissible for Muslims.

Conclusion

Muslims interested in participating in airdrops should conduct thorough research on the coins before receiving them. Many muftis, although some disagree, consider cryptocurrency to be speculative and unstable.
