What Is a Permissible Profitable Price?

Answered by Shaykh Muhammad Carr

Question

I am starting an online business selling 18k gemstone jewelry and seek guidance on setting a permissible, profitable price. Should I use an appraisal to determine the price and include both my profit and appraisal costs?

ِAnswer

Thank you for your question. May Allah bless you and your business.

You may factor your appraisal costs and profit margin into the price.

Generally, a sale is permissible for any price the buyer and seller agree upon. Allah (Most High) says in the Quran, “O you who believe, do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly but only [in lawful] business by mutual consent. And do not kill yourselves. Indeed, Allah is to you ever Merciful.” [Quran, 4:29]

Profit Ceiling

There is no ceiling to profit. In the Sunna, evidence shows the permissibility of making a 100% profit.

In the hadith narrated by Bukhari and others, from ‘Urwa Ibn al-Ja‘d, he said, “A shipment was brought to the Prophet (Allah bless him and give him peace), so he gave me a dinar and said, ‘O ‘Urwa, go to the shipment and buy us a sheep.’ I went to the shipment, negotiated with the seller, and bought two sheep for one dinar.

I then returned with them, and a man met and negotiated with me. I sold him one sheep for one dinar. I returned with the dinar and the sheep and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, here is your dinar, and here is your sheep.’ The Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) then said: ‘O Allah, bless him in this transaction of his.’” [Bukhari]

Reasonableness

While there is no ceiling to the profit, you should strive to be as accommodating as possible. The Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, “May Allah have mercy on the person who is accommodating in buying and selling.” [Muwatta]

If the seller is asked about the market price, he should respond honestly, as failing to do so may lead to deception (ghiss). The Prophet (Allah bless him and grant him peace) said, “Whoever deceives us is not one of us.” [Muslim]

I pray this is of benefit and Allah guides us all.
