Is One Sinful for an Unintended Physiological Response During a Halal Act?
Hanafi Fiqh
Answered by Mawlana Ilyas Patel
Question
I engage in a halal act out of curiosity or boredom, which involuntarily causes madhi and psychological arousal, not sexual pleasure. The act is halal, my intention is pure. I feel guilt about the response, not pleasure.
I am attracted to the act itself, not its outcome. The response occurs every time. Am I sinful if I neither seek nor enjoy the response?
Does Sadd al-Dhara’i make me sinful, or is it merely caution? Does certainty that madhi affects wudu and salah change the ruling?
Does al-asl fil ashya’ al-ibaha apply? Is not consulting a scholar beforehand negligence?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful and Compassionate.
It seems you hold your reproductive organ out of curiosity and boredom, which causes involuntary excitement and the release of arousal fluid (madhi). The release of arousal fluid (madhi) will necessitate wudu and washing the affected area.
However, you will not be sinful, as you neither seek nor enjoy the response. You should try to refrain from doing so now, as it is causing the release of arousal fluid.
Arousal fluid (madhi) is filthy (najis); it nullifies wudu and requires washing of the affected garment area for salah.
Allah Most High said, “There is no fault in you in the mistakes you have made, but only in what your hearts have intended on purpose: And ever was Allah forgiving, merciful.” [Quran 33:5; Keller, The Quran Beheld]
Arousal Fluid (Madhi)
Arousal fluid (madhi) is a thin white liquid that exits near the time of arousal. It also differs from semen(mani) in that it doesn’t exit in spurts, the erection normally does not subside with its release, and its exit might not even be felt. It requires wudu, not a bath (ghusl). [Tahtawi, Hashiyat al-Tahtawi ‘ala Maraqi al-Falah]
Avoid the Act Due to Its Consequential Effects
An act that might be permissible in itself, but it would be advisable to avoid as a precaution against its consequences.
Generally, not consulting a scholar beforehand isn’t automatically negligence. A person should seek knowledge when they don’t know the ruling, or they have a reason to believe an action may be impermissible.
And Allah knows best.
