Is It Permissible for Me to Supplicate That Allah Make This Man My Husband?

Answered by Ustadha Shazia Ahmad

Question:

A sister I know had seen a man once and felt a strong urge to marry him. She just prayed and prayed and got a proposal from his family. I also have feelings for someone who barely knows me. I know this might not work out because it’s unrequited love, but still, I want to pray to marry him. I don’t want to be obsessed, but I want to ask Allah. I am ready for either outcome. Is it okay if I ask Allah for him once in my dua’s?

Answer:

Assalamu alaykum,

Thank you for your question. It is permissible for you to ask Allah for anything that you want, as long as you are within the etiquette of supplication.

Etiquette of supplication

You have the right attitude about supplicating to your Lord, Most High. One should ask Allah, knowing that He knows us better than we know ourselves and that He will provide for us in the way and in the timing that He has deemed fit. Trust and reliance and patience are key. Please see these links for the etiquette of supplication and more.

Preparation

In the meantime, prepare yourself to be the best wife that you can be. Take a course here on marriage and review your personally obligatory fiqh (fard `ayn). Humble yourself in worship to your Lord and remember Him at all times. Keep yourself busy with acquiring useful skills, learning, exercising, and helping others.

Contemplate the following hadith: The Prophet, (Allah bless him and give him peace), “One of you is granted an answer (to his supplication) provided he does not say: ‘I prayed, but I was not granted an answer. ‘”[Abu Dawud]
